13th General Assembly
Communion and Mission "ad extra" in the III Millennium

Communiqué #4 May 15, 2007

Relazione economica

Monday, May 14 was spent on the topic of finances. Fr. Giovanni Beretta, General Treasurer of PIME, reported to the Assembly on the financial situation of the Institute and of some problematic issues. At the present time, there is not a vice-treasurer in the office. The ordinary subsidies for various Regions as well as specific projects presented by various Regions were explained. These projects, originally presented at the meeting of the PIME treasurers at the end of April, will be discussed and voted upon during the Plenary Council that will take place immediately after this Assembly.

In the discussion that followed Fr. Beretta’s report, a number of issues came forward. Among these topics: an ethical investment policy for all of PIME, the need for a program and a communal system of accountability for all the Regions that will guarantee more uniformity and more precision in accounting. In addition, the investment in the building of Via Pagliano in Milan, which will be rented to the “Istituto Auxologico Italiana”*, the possibility of constructing a new underground parking lot near the same area (next to the old seminary building), and the possibility of obtaining the building that presently belongs to the Sisters of Christian Doctrine, on Via Poerio, about 5 minutes from the General House, in return for the present seminary building on via Pisacane, in Rome.

Fr. Mark Tardiff and Br. Fabio Mussi, members of the present General Directorate, presented the afore mentioned projects.

The Assembly was in favor of the role of a vice-treasurer general who would work together in the Finance Office in Rome. Some points concerning the projects that were presented and will be voted upon during the Plenary Council were clarified, and the Assembly showed some uncertainty in the need for an underground parking lot in Milan.

The discussion concerning ethical investments is one that has gone on for some time now in PIME. The issue was also brought up in the previous General Assembly and in previous Plenary Councils. The United States Region has a clear policy in this area, which was modified in November 2006. Also the Italy, some movement has been made in this area. Some issues still need to be reviewed.

* Istituto Auxologico Italiana was founded by Mons. Giuseppe Bicchierai in 1963. Its original purpose was to cure birth defects and other illnesses of newborns, and gradually broadened its vision to include various aspects of human development, not solely of the newborn. Nowadays, the Institute is particularly dedicated to recovery and care of a scientific nature, especially in the Lombardy and Piedmont Regions of Italy. Included in its scope are bioethical research and the care and formation of persons involved in this sector. The building on Via Pagliano will be used particularly for health care of the elderly.
