13th General Assembly
Communion and Mission "ad extra" in the III Millennium

Communiqué # 6 - May 21, 2007

Unification in Italy, Mission Animation in Latin America,
PIME’S Theological School and Communities

Friday and Saturday, May 18 and 19, the General Assembly discussed and approved two motions and voted to keep article 43 of the Constitutions concerning PIME’s School of Theology.

ITALY.  After discussing and reflecting upon the last few years, which brought about the Assembly of the two Italian Regions, ARI, in October, 2006, in Milan, it was decided that at the end of the present term of the two Regional Councils, in October, 2008, the two separate regions will no longer exist and a new unified Italian Region will begin.  In the meantime, there will be some work on some provisional regulations for the election of the new Superior and his Council. The General Assembly also decided to leave the final decision for the place of the new region up to the new Council and the General Directorate. The Assembly suggested that the new region be headquartered in Naples.

MISSIONARY ANIMATION.  Various topics relating to this point were discussed. An integral part of evangelization is that of animating our local Churches. We also brought to mind the long and unwavering concern that PIME has to a animate for the missions seminarians, local clergy and religious. Latin America, the continent of hope, can give a big contribution to the missions among non-Christians. The region of South Brazil proposed that the Institute move in this direction, in collaboration with the diocesan priests from Colombia that have already ministered together with PIME in Mexico and Bangladesh. Three of them have returned to their diocese and speak highly of the experience. There is also the possibility that PIME’s Portuguese language magazine, Missao Jovem, be translated into Spanish for other Latin American countries.

PIME’S THEOLOGICAL SCHOOL. At the end of a long debate which included many aspects of initial formation, brought forward from the Instrumentum Laboris and other documents that were presented to the Assembly, it was voted not to change Article 43 of the Constitutions, which states that PIME must have its own school of theology.  This School is in Monza, Italy.

The Assembly also voted to leave it to the next General Directorate to decide whether to keep the Theological Community in Tagaytay, Philippines. The Assembly did give its opinion, in favor of keeping both theological communities, as they are right now. Another opinion was given, that to keep the formation communities of Pune, Brusque and Rome as they are structured right now.  The Assembly also discussed the possibility proposed by the three African circumscriptions of Guinea Bissau, Cameroon and Ivory Coast to have a PIME formation community in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

All PIME members who are qualified to teach are warmly welcomed to be open and willing to teaching in PIME’s theological school.

On Saturday afternoon, May 19, the members of the Assembly gathered without the presence of the verbal secretaries to exchange some opinions regarding the next General Directorate. The election will take place at the end of this week.

SUNDAY is a day off for the Assembly. Some rested, others took the opportunity to visit different places near to Rome and Ariccia. A group went to Tivoli to visit the Villa of Adrian the Villa d’Este, together with the former prime minister of England, Margaret Thatcher and her husband.

On Monday, the discussion on Initial Formation will finish and move to a discussion on Continuing Formation and Total Well-being of the members, which is Chapter 4 of the Instrumentum Laboris.
