Lettera di P. Zanchi ai missionari del Pime relativa al rapimento di P. Giancarlo Bossi.
Ai missionari del PIME Loro sedi
Carissimi,
il nostro confratello P.Giancarlo Bossi è stato rapito il 10 giugno a Payao, nell’isola di Mindanao (Filippine), mentre si recava a celebrare l’Eucaristia domenicale in una comunità.
Fin dai primi giorni del rapimento il governo italiano si è attivato nel seguire da vicino la vicenda con l’Ambasciatore nelle Filippine, e in Italia con l’unità di crisi del Ministero degli Esteri. La Santa Sede si è subito mobilitata attraverso il Nunzio e la segreteria di Stato. Anche le autorità politiche, religiose ed ecclesiali di Payao, Prelatura di Ipil, e di Zamboanga si sono subito adoperate, insieme ai nostri missionari, per la liberazione di p. Bossi. Tutti noi, insieme alla famiglia, alla parrocchia e agli amici di p. Giancarlo, siamo in attesa fiduciosa di notizie che annuncino la sua liberazione, ma dobbiamo dire che, fino ad oggi, non è stata fatta alcuna rivendicazione né sappiamo il perché del sequestro.
Mentre si stanno tentando tutte le vie per una soluzione positiva della vicenda, per noi missionari un fatto del genere non è un semplice fatto di cronaca, ma costituisce motivo di riflessione che ci deve riportare all’origine della nostra vocazione e missione. Proprio il vangelo della scorsa domenica (Lc 9, 51ss) parla di Gesù che si avvia decisamente verso Gerusalemme per donare la sua vita. In questo cammino verso Gerusalemme ci sono anche i discepoli, chiamati alla sequela e a condividere la sorte del loro maestro. Fin dall’inizio di questo viaggio di Gesù verso Gerusalemme vi è qualcuno che ne intralcia il cammino: i samaritani. Come allora, anche noi, oggi, constatiamo che nel mondo ci sono sempre persone che si oppongono al bene e preferiscono seguire strade diverse. Le difficoltà sorgono, però, non solo dall’esterno, anche dall’interno del gruppo dei discepoli c’è una reazione esagerata. Infatti Giacomo e Giovanni, reagiscono a questo intralcio e vorrebbero ricorrere alle maniere forti: “Vuoi che diciamo che scenda un fuoco dal cielo e li consumi?” (Lc 12,54). Gesù li rimprovera severamente. Il discepolo non deve fare guerre sante o crociate, ma è chiamato a seguire il Maestro. A chi usa violenza, menzogna e persecuzione, il discepolo deve rispondere invocando benedizioni: “Amate i vostri nemici e pregate per i vostri persecutori ” (Mt 5,44). E’ il comando di Gesù, è la richiesta dell’amore gratuito e incondizionato che non si aspetta alcun contraccambio e che, come quello di Dio, raggiunge anche chi fa il male. La preghiera per i persecutori purifica la mente e il cuore e fa vedere il malvagio con gli occhi di Dio, che non ha nemici. Quello che Gesù richiede non è altro che quello che lui è stato e ha fatto. Di fronte al rapimento di p. Bossi, forse anche noi siamo stati tentati, come i due discepoli, di invocare interventi forti e sbrigativi. Dobbiamo superare questa reazione spontanea, questa tentazione, ricordando che l’incomprensione, il rifiuto, la violenza, la persecuzione, il martirio, fanno parte della nostra vocazione missionaria. Il seguire Gesù nel suo impegnativo cammino verso Gerusalemme richiede una libertà interiore che è prima di tutto una libertà da se stessi ed è una sequela che esige totalità e radicalità.
La storia recente della nostra presenza in Mindanao è costellata dalla testimonianza di due confratelli che hanno offerto la vita e da un altro che ha subito, come p.Bossi, il sequestro. Nonostante questi rischi, sempre presenti e attuali, i nostri confratelli continuano la loro attività e la loro presenza, condividendo e dando la vita per la gente di Mindanao. Il vero risultato della missione non è tanto nella risposta degli uomini, ma nella fedeltà del missionario al dono ricevuto. La validità della missione e dei suoi frutti sono nelle mani di Dio e Dio li mostrerà quando vorrà. Per il missionario la verifica è sulla sua fedeltà. L’essere rimasti in Mindanao, nonostante tutti i rischi e le difficoltà, è senza dubbio una testimonianza di questa fedeltà.
Nella solennità dei Ss. Apostoli Pietro e Paolo la liturgia ci ha ricordato l’arresto in prigione di Pietro: “ Pietro dunque era tenuto in prigione, mentre una preghiera saliva incessantemente a Dio dalla Chiesa per lui ” (At 12,5). La Chiesa si rivolge al Signore perché si rende conto che, senza di lui, non può uscire dalla situazione tragica in cui si trova. Ma è anche l’espressione di una fiducia profonda e totale in Dio che non abbandona mai i suoi; essi possono e devono rimettersi a lui che interverrà al momento e nel modo che solo lui vorrà. Anche noi, mossi dagli stessi sentimenti e dalla stessa fede, vogliamo, insieme, rivolgere a Dio la nostra preghiera per la liberazione del nostro confratello p. Giancarlo Bossi. So che tutti, da subito, hanno rivolto al Signore preghiere di intercessione, tuttavia, in occasione del 10 luglio, a un mese dal rapimento, invito tutte le comunità del PIME, nelle diverse case e missioni, a un giornata intensa e speciale di preghiera per p. Bossi: il Signore gli doni abbondante il coraggio, la speranza e la pazienza; e per i suoi sequestratori : Dio tocchi il loro cuore e si ravvedino. Si sono fatte e si stanno programmando iniziative e manifestazioni a diversi livelli per sollecitare la liberazione di p. Giancarlo. Ben vengano queste manifestazioni di sostegno e di solidarietà, ma non dimentichiamo la preghiera: siamo nelle mani di Dio. La preghiera incessante della prima comunità cristiana è stata esaudita con l’invio di un angelo. Anche la nostra preghiera incessante, unita alla preghiera che sale a Dio da ogni parte del mondo, sarà esaudita. P. Giancarlo tornerà presto per la gioia dei suoi cari, per la nostra gioia, per la gioia della gente di Payao e di tutti coloro che hanno creduto nella potenza della preghiera e si sono prodigati in modi diversi per la sua liberazione. In questo momento di sofferenza e di incertezza invochiamo l’intercessione e la presenza di Maria, Regina degli apostoli, e le chiediamo di poter presto cantare con lei il nostro Magnificat.

Italia − Letter of Superior General to the missionaries of Pime To the Missionaries of PIME Dear Confreres, Our confrere Fr. Giancarlo Bossi was abducted on June 10 in Payao, on the island of Mindanao (Philippines), while he was travelling to a community in order to celebrate the Sunday Eucharist. Since the very beginning of the abduction the Italian government has been active in closely following the case: in the Philippines through the Ambassador and in Italy through the Crisis Unit of the Foreign Ministry. The Holy See immediately offered its contribution through the Nuncio and through the Secretary of State. In addition, the political, religious, and Church authorities of Payao, of the Prelature of Ipil, and of Zamboanga immediately set to work, together with our missionaries, for the liberation of Fr. Bossi. All of us, together with the family, friends, and parish of Fr. Giancarlo, are waiting with hope for the news announcing his liberation. However, we have to say that, as of today, no one has claimed responsibility, nor do we know why he was abducted.
While all possible means are being tried in order to
resolve the situation peacefully, this type of incident
is not simply a news item for us missionaries, but
rather is grounds for a reflection which should take us
back to the origin of our vocation and our mission. In the face of those who practice violence, lies, and persecution, the disciple must respond by invoking a blessing: “Love your enemies and pray for you persecutors” (Mt. 5:44). This is the command of Jesus: it is the demand for a gratuitous and unconditional love which does not expect any return and which, like the love of God, extends even to those who do evil. Prayer for one’s persecutors purifies the mind and the heart, and makes one look at the evildoer with the eyes of God, who does not have enemies. What Jesus demands is none other than what He was and did.
Faced with the abduction of Fr. Bossi, perhaps we were
also tempted, as were the two disciples, to call for
swift and severe measures. We have to overcome this
spontaneous reaction, this temptation, remembering that
misunderstanding, rejection, violence, persecution, and
martyrdom are part of our missionary vocation. The recent history of our presence in Mindanao has been marked by the testimony of two confreres who gave their lives and another who, like Fr. Bossi, suffered abduction. Despite these risks, which are always present and actual, our confreres continue their activity and their presence, sharing and giving their lives for the people of Mindanao. The true result of the mission is not so much the response of the people, but rather the fidelity of the missionary to the gift he has received. The effectiveness of the mission and its fruits are in the hands of God, and God will display them when He wants to. The test of the missionary is his fidelity. Remaining in Mindanao, despite all the risks and the difficulties, is without doubt a proof of this fidelity. The liturgy of the solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul reminds us of the arrest and imprisonment of Peter: “So Peter was kept in prison; but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church” (Acts 12:5). The Church turns to the Lord because she realizes that, without Him, she cannot escape from the tragic situation in which she finds herself. But it is also the expression of a deep and total trust in God who never abandons His own: she can and must entrust herself to Him who will intervene at the time and in the way He chooses. We, too, moved by the same sentiments and the same faith, want to join together in prayer to God for the liberation of our confrere Fr. Giancarlo Bossi. I know that everyone has, since the first moment, turned to the Lord in prayer and intercession. However, I invite all the communities of PIME, in the various houses and missions, to hold a special day of intense prayer for Fr. Bossi on July 10, a month since the abduction. I invite all to pray that the Lord will give Fr. Bossi abundant courage, hope, and patience; that God will touch the hearts of his abductors and that they will repent. Various initiatives and manifestations have been held and are being planned at different levels in order to call for the liberation of Fr. Giancarlo. These manifestations of support and solidarity are most welcome, but let us not forget prayer: we are in the hands of God. The unceasing prayer of the first Christian community was answered with the dispatch of an angel. Our unceasing prayer, united to the prayer which is rising from every part of the world, will also be heard. Fr. Giancarlo will soon return, to the joy of his dear ones, to our joy, to the joy of the people of Payao, and to the joy of all those who have believed in the power of prayer and who have, in various ways, done all they could for his liberation. In this moment of uncertainty and of suffering we invoke the intercession and the presence of Mary, Queen of the Apostles, and we ask that we may soon be able to sing with her our own Magnificat.
